Hemorrhoidal band ligation is an effective, simple, and painless method for treating hemorrhoids. The procedure is considered more than 99% effective and takes less than 1 minute. Three sessions are required, usually spaced 2 weeks apart.

The Procedure

This procedure is minimally invasive and requires no sedation. Your doctor will insert a short, lighted tube called an anoscope into your rectum, using the scope to see the hemorrhoids and place 1 tiny rubber band around the base of each hemorrhoid. The band cuts off circulation to the hemorrhoid, causing it to wither and fall off, usually within a week. The entire process typically takes just a minute or two, and you can return to your normal activities the same day. Patients need not take valuable time off from work.

Risks

During the first 24 hours, you may experience a feeling of fullness or a dull ache in the rectum. There is less than 1% risk of bleeding, infection or pain.
