Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are caused by increased pressure on the veins in the rectum or anus. They can occur from prolonged sitting or straining at a bowel movement, but the two most common causes of this increased pressure are constipation and pregnancy. In fact, hemorrhoids are frequently related to constipation.
Most minor, small hemorrhoids will disappear by themselves with no intervention. Hemorrhoids caused by pregnancy normally resolve shortly after childbirth. However, if the underlying cause of the hemorrhoids is not addressed they can become large and painful, sometimes bleeding and causing major discomfort.
Symptoms
- Bright Blood in Stool
- Painful Bowel Movements
Treatment
The best way to avoid and/or treat hemorrhoids is to prevent constipation. You can avoid constipation by drinking enough water (about 6-8 glasses a day), and getting enough fiber in your diet. The recommended daily mount of fiber intake is 30-40 grams. If you are unaccustomed to eating a high fiber diet it's important to add it gradually to avoid gas, bloating and diarrhea.
There are a number of other treatment options for chronic hemorrhoids. Make an appointment today to talk with an AGA physician and discuss the right course of action for your individual case.
